i'm an expierenced newb (kind of). To start a char read through the char creation part of the book u get when u buy the game. Choose a character that sounds fun to YOU. I dont care what people say about a newb always choosing the coolest class and then not being able to play them cuz they're difficult, for the most part they are wrong. Play a class u like and a race you like and your probably going to stick with it longer.

Start at casters realm, read all of the creation guides, then go to the class websites of the classes that interest you. Then ask specific questions here.

In the 5 years that I have been playing this game I've played a few characters that I liked for awhile, but got bored of. I started as a Ranger as my 1st toon, then I tried a druid. I didn't get either one of these past level 9. I then rolled a monk that I liked pretty well until the late teens, when I started having troubles finding groups (pre-Kunark). Then right about the time Kunark was released I took over a Necro my roommate had rolled up. I liked him a lot, and got him to 19 before I quit the game for a couple years.

About a year ago, I started playing again (was jonesin' hard!) I remembered that I liked my Necro a lot, but I wanted more melee, so I rolled up my present 25 SK as my first character since returning. Before LDoN came out, I didn't have Luclin or PoP, so I kinda got stuck in the early 20s. So I rolled up my Frog SHM (when LoY was released) and got him stuck in the early 20s. Then for some reason I decided to roll up a Ranger again. And after having such a great time kickin the crap out of Dvinn and Emperor Crush with a lot of great groups in Crushbone, my Ranger was 21 and LDoN was released. That allowed for a really nice avenue for all my 20s toons to get up in their levels. My Ranger quickly overtook the others as my Main. And is now 43. I call him my Main because I feel the deepest attatchment to him over my other toons. Even though he really is the youngest of them. But now he is the one most like me, and how I want to play the game as a character.

Just remember this: You've got more than one space for characters on a server (except FV) so don't be afraid to experiment a little. Look at me, I experimented with a lot of toons, but in the end it was actually my very first choice that ended up as my main.

If you want to know everything to be known, you want a book, not a reply.

The best bet is to start simple, what do YOU want from the game? First you need to select a character, I know that's obvious, but choosing the right character is the most import decision you can make and shouldn't be taken lightly. Study the classes based on the way they play and how they compare to how YOU want to play. Once you've narrowed it down to a few classes study all the little details of the classes like spells or abilities. Read comments that relate to the ability to see if it's something you'd like your character to have. Study the effects the different races have for each class to see which is more to your liking.

In the end it's just a game and the point is to have fun. Starting ANYTHING can be difficult but each class has fun points to them. The key is matching you to your class so you have the best play experience you can have. Read up on creation guides and play guides to get the best idea.

The last thing to remember is that you ARE playing with other people and the way you act in game WILL effect others so try to do your part to enhance their fun and the kindness will be returned.

The real question is, "What kind of class do you want to be?" There are two basic answers to this; a tank or a caster. Once you decide how you want to do your damage, then you can start questioning the finer points.

If you chose caster, what kind of caster? Do you want to be a healing class? A pure offensive class? An indirect class? Or a pet class?

If you chose tank, what kind of tank? Do you want to be a meat shield? Do you want to be a pure melee or a hybrid? High DPS or high HP?

Answer yourself these questions and picking a starting class will be MUCH easier. Of course, not many people end up playing their first toon all the way to 65. Personally, I had to re-roll a few different times before I finally made my ranger.

Later you might want to try out a different type of player. Do it. Don't be afraid to jump from player to player for a while. It's important to find the playing style that you enjoy the most. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun.

I can't even imagine haveing only one player. I have 2 accounts with 8 palyers on each account. Granted that 2 are Traders and 4 are mules. Thant leaves me with 10 actively played characters. Granted, I will most likely never get one to 65 - but to me the game is for relaxation and haveing fun. I allways play in the same group, and we put togeter different level character and different class groupings depending on what we want to do on a given night. Some nights we may want to just relax, so we take our mid-level toons to the spires in SK (which is pretty much deserted these days) and have a ball with the gnolls. Other nights we might take our high level bunch into Nadox for a little bit more adrenaline. We can also put together a full group of necros - now THAT is fun to watch. Awesome firepower!

Anyway, my point is - it's a game. Create a ton, go have fun, Create another toon, go have more fun. You get 8 toons per account on all but FV - so dont worry about what character/class you should create. Try them out and find what you like and enjoy!

Well...my situation as a newb was a bit different. I had a brother who told me the basics, but you can't learn very well from people "telling" you how and what to do.

Simply put: GET IN THE GAME!

Group and ask questions if you don't know- don't feel bad to be a newb because everyone starts as one.

It's not so bad from lvl 1-20, but after that you need to know how to play your character. Read up on what that class's main part is. A warrior is a tank- a cleric is a healer- a shaman/chanter is a slower....etc

Most importantly, LEARN from your mistakes. If you happen to grab aggro from the tank in the group and die because of it- next time you'll know not to get so close or use that particular spell :).

Another thing that works is asking higher level players a question you need answered. Sometimes people are nice, other times they are jerks. *shrug* Maybe you'll find someone that will group with you and tell you certain things.

Anyways, Good Luck!
