Need help understanding FirewallsFollow

Im having a hard time understanding firewalls and how to use them. I use Nortan Anit virus on my computer and when I first started playing everquest I wasn't able to get into the game. The game would freeze up and I would have to crash the computer. Later on I found out that everytime I logged on to the EQ server norton would open a window box asking if the EQ server could access the internet. The only way ive been getting onto play everquest was disabling the firewall. Is there anyway I can keep my firewalls up and still log into play. I've been playing EQ for about 3 months and have had to erase everything on my computer due to viruses. Please any help for a stupid computer user would be great thanks.

P.S. when i mean stupid i mean STUPID

Firewalls do tend to interfere with your connection to the game. I recommend leaving them off. EQ has its own set of firewalls, and you will be protected while playing the game. Just remember to turn your Virus Protection back on when your not in the game.

Beadilsilverdagger, first of all, I assume you mean Norton Internet Security/Norton Firewall. Norton Antivirus only scans for viruses. It may slow down the loading and zoning times if left running when playing EQ or any other game, but it does not block ports.

Also, EQ doesn't contain a firewall like what Spiritchaser says. And with all the internet worms out there that try to hack through windows security, you should always be running a firewall.

You can go to http://eqlive.station.sony.com/support/tech_support/ts_network_support_firewall_proxy_info.jsp for information about setting up Norton Firewall so that it doesn't interfear with EQ.

I never never never run win xp and get online without a firewall running. I don't use norton, instead I use a free firewall called Zone Alarm. If you want to try it you can download it here:

ALL software firewalls are BAD to run for the OS.

1. they hog up recourses.
2. they slow down more then just surfing the web
3. they have loads of conflicts that are not showing up in the forground and can cause oddities to happen.
4. they interfer with instalation of programs.
5. have watched zone alarm crash programs.

solution, take the money you could spend on a software firewall and buy a router i reccomend the SMC7004FW and set up the port triggering.

with that you will be protected enough and still be able to play what ever you want without concern of things crashing, or your system being lagged out by junk software running in the background.

The Norton Anti Virus and Internet Security are now packaged together, this is resulting in the blur when people refer to one or the other.

What you need to do is open up Norton Internet Security to go to the firewall option in Norton Internet Security and then click configure. You'll see Program Control as an option to press somewhere, click it and select 'always allow' for Everquest.exe amd eqgame.exe.

I also use Norton Internet Security and find it a very stable product to use with EQ. Take heart...you can get this to work. Norton will sense a port change when you sometimes zone. Going back to a previous post - "EQ Servers" are actually a collection of multiple computers (normally around 6-8 machines) and each has a set of designated zones on them. If you move from say box 1 to box 3 because of a zone change, the port will sometime change as well.

Norton Internet Security will detect the change in source port on the server and sometimes believe that this is a trojan horse virus. Norton also checks all executables on your computer and records to version number. When you run a program scan the list of executables and version numbers is updated.

To prevent the "getting booted out of EQ to the OS" whenever patcher upgrades any of the main EXE's (particularly eqgame.exe) make sure you re-run program scan before going into EQ. You do this by going into Norton Internet Security and under the Status & Settings, click Personal Firewall and click the Configure button. This will bring up a multi-tabbed dialog box. Click the Programs tab and click the Program Scan button. Norton will run a scan of all your hard drives and record any executables in the firewall policy.

Once it has finished the scan you should see two entries normally listed as "989 Studios Everquest." Change the Internet Access setting from Automatic to Permit All to prevent the dialog boxes from appearing. Although this process is time consuming and a bit of a pain, fortunately core EQ client upgrades are not done that often.
