I have all the stuff I need to get a piece of new armor from my fellow dwarves in Thurgadin, BUT I am only amiable with them.. My plans are to take a fellow guild member who is in the same boat I am and go up to the frost giant fort in GD and beat on them for awhile.. The question is how many do we have to kill to raise our faction?? I thought 40 or so should do it.. Is that way too many, not enough..
and more genarically any way to judge how much of creature X you havce to kill to raise your faction with their enemy??

Well, for increasing fractions, consult your math teacher. For increasing faction, ask here. You will need to kill LOADS of giants to get up to good enough faction. By loads, I mean drop a couple of zeros on to your planned number, especially if they are GD giants. And no, there is no generic answer.
There IS a chart I saw once with faction points. Forget where I saw it though.
If you haven't already, do the first 2 or 3 Shawl quests while you hunt in GD. You get nice faction adjustment for completing the quests.

Handing in the toes and heads for the first two shawls can be done multiple times for much better faction hits than simply killing the giants. Of course you have to kill the giants to get the heads and toes.
You are up to handing in armour then you should also know that the Plate house side of Kael gives good Coldain faction. As far as I remember Arena only gives CoV but the entry mobs and the Plate house give Coldain too. You might also get some more armour.
