Im a 25 human ranger busy exploring as much of the world as possible, sometimes soloing and sometimes grouping. I'm carrying the black blade of tormenting, ( a present from a stranger!!) and a long fanged glaive. Most of my melee skills are maxed or almost maxed. Dual wield is sorted and ive got no fear.....!
What i was wondering was this.... When i get into a fight, i regularly hit for about 18pts of damage with one hand and a bit less for the other. I kick for about 8-9pts. I was pretty happy with that until i noticed that warriors and wotnot of similar lvls were hitting for shedloads more than that.
now i know im a human, and i know im a ranger, but is klumping mobs for 17 or 18 pts about what i should expect at this lvl with this kit?
I know also that lots of other factors, strength, dex etc have a bearing, but i just want an opinion from others. am i missing something? or can i expect to spend some time yet poncing around giving mobs a fair slap, but not really giving them a good pummeling.
Any weapon advice would be nice. But i,m doing it all the hard way, and funds are limited......
thanx for any advice =~}

I would say that 9 times out of 10, those warriors you see smacking stuff around are twinks. They are probably using very expensive weapons that in all honesty, they shouldn't have yet. You will come to find out that (especially in melee) gear is the all determining factor. Don't let some twink discourage you from playing the class you want to. You will come across better gear soon enough. Besides, you don't want to hit harder than the MT and pull aggro :p

Just my 2c

I wouldn't worry just yet about your weapons... I agree that some warriors have some pretty hefty weaps for their level. just remember- as a ranger your job is to deal damage without getting aggro. (and keeping em' snared so they dont run) My advice (I'm a 60 ranger) is that you should focus on getting a haste item next... It really doesn't matter if you only do half the damage as the warrior or pally who is MT'ing.. what matters is that you can beat down a mob, without aggro'ing it. When it is time to start upgrading your weapons, remember:proc'ing weaps = aggro (esp. stun weaps)aggro = death (us rangers are famous for our paper armor, lol) or it = cleric wasting mana healing you as well as the MT

Good luck out there!

Mr.Paulsol,
What server are you on? I would like to know because if your on one of the 2 servers i play on (fat chance)i may have a few weapons for you. Probably wont make u hit as hard as those warriors but you'll hit a little harder.

You are probably seeing 2-hand weapons as well (Beserker I would guess). Just get the best gear you can afford, but gear does not matter too much for you until post level 40. At 25 or so you can get by with very marginal armor and wepaons, however as you get to 40 and beyond you start to rely on your armor and weapons to merely survive. I am 51 Ranger I hit for 40 as a maximum with my 11 damage weapon. So at 25 you are doing fine, I agree that the first piece or armor you should get is the haste item, this pays off in that it makes any weapon you buy better. Grab yourself a wurmslayer, that should excite you, and is a great weapon right up to about level 50 (and beyond, but you should be able to afford something better by then. My suggestion for you is get a Wurmslayer and a Jagged blade of Morning. You should be able to get these for around 1500pp(900pp for wurmslayer, and 600pp for JBoM) for both, if your server economy is close to mine. SO go get haste item, then get these two weapons, and that will take you a long way. Read soem of the other posts on how to make money. Right now would be a perfect time for you to start hunting Crag spiders in East Karana.... Good luck.

Rangers damage output is unfortunately not as great as other classes during the lower levels.
Also, a 'twink' will simply outdamage you. If you have earnt your equipment it will not be comparable to a level 65 who twinks a level 25 for 'fun'.

However, persist.

Rangers simply get better and better and you will begin to love the character, I assure you. There is a touch patch from level 39 to 49 but once you pass that .. Its wonderful Smiley: smile You have Trueshot to work for, reliable spells, EQ/AM3 etc etc. It is not easy but the journey there is pleasant the rewards at the end are to be the most flexible and well stacking class in EQ.

In my guild, we have a wizard army and a ranger army. Wizards deal with most damage, but Rangers come in second for burst damage with trueshot. It is truly a glorius sight to see 5 rangers each hitting for 1 to 2k per arrow repeatedly on a target Smiley: smile

Yup agree, Jagged Blade of Mourning (JBOM). Venemous axe or some other proc weapon in offhand.

Don't ignore that bow. Get a good one, work on your arrowmaking skills.

When you can fear animals, start fear kiting. Learn to use that and snare effectively, and you can solo reds (animals), duo with others to kill serious mobs (try a shammy or necro).

My 36 ranger has been huge fun to play, and you will just keep getting better.

For 4 more levels (until 40). Then you stay the same for 10 levels as the mobs keep getting better.

I disagree, Venemous axe is a better Warrior weapon than Ranger. Wurmy in the primary, JBoM in secondary is much better.

I disagree, I used a Trueshot longbow until Level 45, and the only reason I changed it was becasue I got one with goo stats. In fact I didn't even equip my bow from about lvl 25-45. Instead I put a Thorned idol there. I would swap in my bow to pull, but then in went the idol again.

Work on your fletching, you need to get to 68 at least to make the 150 range arrow trivial I believe.

40-51 can be a little bit of a pain, but group in the Dreadlands and it'll go fast enough. Grouping being the key at that level range. I saved all my training points for the bow and didn't bother with it till I was 46+ and I trained it up. Cost a bundle at the higher ranks but was worth it over slowly raising it.

If you've neglected your 2H Slash, buy a nice Silver Swiftblade. It's 16/24 ratio will train you up pretty quick.

DEX is THE most important stat for bow usage. Once you're 55+ your bow damage will overtake your melee damage and when you hit 59 for the bow AA's you'll rock.

My brother is an officer of Fires of Heaven on Veeshan and is a Wizard, he says the Rangers out-damage HIM! Mind you he's got some of the sweetest gear in the game and some items no one on other servers own yet. Ofcourse those Rangers also probably own better bows than most Rangers will ever see but I would say Rangers are right up there with Wizards on damage, but can take damage better, run at Sow speed and don't depend on mana to do that damage! (Not trying to knock Wizards, just showing Ranger pride. hehe)

Want to see some nice Ranger gear to look forward too, feel free to look at mine. I'm a self twink, Those are my highest level characters, but I'm a wiz in the bazaar and made a fortune and invest it into my characters. The Gemmed sword is a new GoD player-made item, it's sweet but expensive. If you can get one though it's even lvl 1 usable so a good investment at any level.

thanks for all of the above.Just to be clear.... I wasn't too worried about warriors hitting for more. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I'm making a real point of playing feadern the 'hard' way. He's my first and only toon. I have bought a few bits and pieces in the bazaar(bizarre!) and someone gave me the black blade when i was lvl 3 or 4!!
I figured the way to play this game was (for me anyway) to earn everything, either by questing or by fighting for it. I've never begged. Somebody gave me 10 PP once but only 'cos as he was showing off his twinked toons kit he dropped half of it on the ground and then walked off. I picked it up and ran after him and gave about 150000PP worth of stuff back. He said thanks and gave me 10PP!!
Anyway my point is, i'm doing it the way I learn't to surf. That is big waves, short board and with my sphincters closed up nice and tight! I am busy saving the cash for some pukka kit and when i've got the money i WILL tool up good an proper... so until then i'll keep hacking away and practising with my bow.
Anyway, thanx again for the advice.
