i currently play a lvl 48 druid, but I dont find it is a very good class for me...I always wanted to make a monk but always kinda backed away because my friends told me it was very hard to find groups as a monk. do you guys think it is worth a shot for me trying a monk?

Nothing wrong with trying. You may find that a monk is not right for you either.

All depends on what you are looking to accomplish in the game. I, personally, enjoy the monk class but 'Joe' may think that they are horrible.

You will find your answer better when you make one and play it for a while. Honestly, you will get your monk supporters and your monk trashers on this board so best bet is try it and see.

If you'd like to try the class, give it a go. I play a monk (now 63) and it can be fun at times. However, there are some fundemental problems with monks. Not to start a huge topic on what those are, here's a small list of why monks are struggling in the current EQ world:

Pulling: While SoE never liked much that monks could pull (and pull very well), they've made it so other classes (bards, chanters, and even clerics) do a much better job at pulling due to lull. This pretty much eliminated the monk's spot in a group for this role.

Tanking: A while back, monks were nerfed fairly hard in terms of their ability to take damage. Due to having high avoidance and fairly good mitigation, they could be strong tanks in xp situations, which caused them to compete with knights and warriors. Post-nerf monks take considerably more damage when getting hit now, and really are not a good choice to fill tank spots.

DPS: This is essentially a monk's only viable role now in EQ as it stands today. However, with better DPS options (many which bring either higher DPS or equal DPS with utility) monks struggle to fill roles in xp groups.

With no real advantage in any of the three potential roles a monk could fill, it is in fact difficult for them to compete for openings in xp groups. I personally have gone 2+ hours before LFG with my monk, something that never happens with my shaman or warrior.

There are some changes for the monk class coming soon, including the addition of the Phantom skill which will be a lull-type skill to help fill a pulling role, and some minor melee-DPS changes. So hopefully these problems will not be long-term.

I'd say go ahead and try a monk, even though they aren't perfect. They are a fun class with good roleplay potential.

This is really more of the case in LDON. In an outside zone, monks are still very good pullers.

I hate the fact they SoE nerfed the monks this bad. The fact that you have a high AC means nothing anymore. Surprised that you still get an AC bonus.

Above the tanking, this is the one thing that hurts the class. Monks were designed to be DPS. Not as much any more.

Sad but true. Seems like the new programers at SoE have a thing against monks. Its a shame too - they were so cool.Smiley: disappointed

back in the day when i played eq (i quit jan 9th 2003) *lvl 61 monk*

i loved my monk, i too started out with a druid and got him to 52. then i decided that it wasnt too exciting so i made a monk.
monks are awesome, groups loved my ability to pull. although the nerf didnt effect me much, as i never tanked and rarely soloed past 55, it still sucked to get nerfed. monks are great pullers (could have changed), and great dps. plus, i would give up dps to get feign death (going monk in ffxi)
