Poll: Do non-roleplaying names annoy youFollow

#52 Jul 28 2004 at 7:23 AM Rating: Good
Names don't really bother me. What bothers me are the players behind the names. I'll group with someone who has a dumb name before someone who IS dumb any day.

Mind you, I am well aware that a name like Illrezzyu Ifudie is often nature's way of saying, 'Don't Touch.'

Any name, no matter how dumb it seems on the surface, can be explained away with a good story and accepted eventually as 'normal.' I once knew a character named Argggggg who had a VERY good background story. But you'd have never guessed.

I don't care too much if other people have non-RP names, except maybe on the roleplay servers or offensive names. I saw a surname of Gotabigone - of course he was a jerk. I like to be a little more creative.

My first toon is Xanothos Daybringer - a human warrior. I duo with a half-elf Paladin - Telestria Daybringer (RL wife).

My second is a DE SK and I can't spell the last name because it is dark elvish for "death merchant" (he hangs out with a DE chanter).

I should be flamed for using an Engish surname for my 31 Iksar monk on FV - Shrokturn (a character from one of my son's novels).
His surname is Dracconsoul. I may have to change it.

I think you should at least make your name a name. DaBasher, Coolkill, and Splatcat aren't names, I just look at it as laziness or obnoxiousness on the part of the player. I say the same for people with names like Illiuidieanll, which are a huge hassle to type in the middle of a pull.

Now that you mention it - I always had the habit of twisting my toons name so that they can be abbreviated easily like En(yaa) an Lay(ena) and always tell groups :"call me xy" - makes things easier once things get rough ;-)

I'm not crazy bout the names that claim instant superiority over everyone. Kind alike Iamthebestt, Iroolyudun, etc etc. I automatically think that someone talked his parents into letting him play EQ when hes not at elementary school.

Yes I hate extrememly distorted LotR names. Really any name that is severely distored and extended is bad. Kinda went like this:

*Hm pick character name. Well I have zero creativity nor the patience to come up with anything orginal! How about Gandolf! er no that didnt work...Gaandalf...Gannndalf....Ggaendeolph! woot!*
OMG just hit the name generator!

P.S my name is from a book haha (:x)

For the most part, non-RP names don't bother me any longer than it takes for me to read their name and feel an instant of pity for their lack of creativity. This includes butchered RP names from popular sci-fi and fantasy books (the LLeggolass's of the world). In my experience there is only a slight correlation between the name and the player. I've played with good players whose names I didn't like at first, and I've played with horrid players with halfway decent RP names.

I do appreciate those folks who name and surname combine in a comic way, RP or not. Nothing pops to mind at the moment but I'm sure we've all seen at least one fellow traveller of Norrath whose name, when we read it, made us laugh out loud. I'll normally send a /tell "great name" in those cases.

The only time I really discriminate is when I am in a newbie zone with a higher level character and I get a tell. If it is from someone with a halfway decent RP name, I'll respond. If it is from "Healzforu" I'll normally ignore it. In my experience the former is generally someone who needs a little help and asks politely about it, while the latter is going to say "gimme some plat/buffz/heal/sow".

My Iksar Monk is named "Amputated Limbs" only because I tought it would be funny imagining a monk attack you with no arms.

I have a 56 Woody Druid called Redbush Twiggenberries. He has red hair of course. I've had the character for about two years now and for some strange reason the last name was removed about a month ago. I can't imagine why... Sounds like a perfect druid name to me.. *shrug*

Redbush - Level 56 Woodelf Druid - Solusek Ro

I fully agree. I think one of the worst name I EVER saw was Bashmobs Mcuberdood. I proceeded to camp, pull out my twink ranger in his age range, and kill him out of a deep felt moral obligation...

I would have to agree that some names bother me, the ones with sexual content or that I can't make hide nor hair of.

As for my two characters: Nikohl was a version of a niece and Shellbi was random select with minor change. Neither currently have surnames but am thinking hard on one for Nikohl.

Would love to get your thoughts on Nikohl An'dime. As in nickel and dime. Which I tend to do in game to my RL BF.

my name originally was Skwish so when i got to lvl 20 i added the last name Maboobs. this lasted for a bit till someone got mad at me and reported me. so the GM showed up and told me to pick another name and i said no so he ended up just removing it. So the next day i just added Maboobs again. for some reason he didnt filter it out or whatever they do. this lasted till around lvl 55 or so when someone got mad at me again and reported me. this time the GMs made my last name _ so i couldnt change it. but when the patch came around where you could remove your own last name i was able to add a last name again. Maboobs and its variations were all filtered so i went with Duchess Skwish Douchess. not as good as maboobs but mildly amusing. I still get lots of tells from people remembering my name way back when i was a noob and how they missed it and have pictures with me in them. i miss Skwish Maboobs =/

Most names don't bother me, and some are quite clever. What bothers me is when the names are not clever, and offensive names.

Ah, it is ok to make funny names, just not obscene.

My cleric is Doktore Soose (would you, could you, with a dwarf?). My son plays a warrior who is named Gaynin Onya. His hobbit druid was Noddan Oftasleep.

I have an alt necro named Villane...gotta come up with a good last name for him.

I saw a good one once a long time ago...was probably asked to change it. His name was Vodkantonic Ondarocks.

Also saw an obscene one around for a long time...was surprised he got away with it for so long...called Lickalotapuss.

There is absolutely no reason why a character cannot have a RW first name and or a RW last name. "Jenna Miller" does not worry me in the slightest

Why would someone elses online game name WORRY you at all?

Those of you who complain about names that are not offensive, need to lighten up and remember that this game is for everyone to have fun, not for everyone to enter and make it entertaining for you. If you are gung ho about names being fantsy based, then give yourself a fantasy name. Who cares what others name themselves?

I believe that the best names are those that are remebered. I am going to remember the name Blossom before I am going to remember Gradluzious...although for purists I am sure Blossom is way out of line. I will add that Blossom was a great player from my early days that was a great friend as well. Anyone who passed up grouping with her because of her name, well it was most definately their loss not hers.

Annoy? Hell no. I can't count how many people I've been able to avoid because of the giant "I'm 11 and think bathroom humor and l33tspeak is funnay!" signs above their heads. That said, my dwarf paladins last name is Squirrelbane in protest of 42,000 variations of over the top corny last names like Uthor Spinebreaker and Lexor Dragonfury.

Why someone thinks a last name of Poosniffffer is going to do anything other than send the message of "Avoid me like the plague" is beyond me.

Oh... and my shamans last name is Danceswithtoads because he's a frog. Or something.

I have different feelings regarding bazaar mules. I feel that main's should have R-P or clever R-Pish sounding names, alts as well. But mules, me and my friends have done some pretty off color ones. My friend had a mule named Sexaholic, and mine was name Putitin. His got changed overnight after about a month straight as a top flight hi profile trader in the bazaar every day and night. Mine never did, I just change mules every now and then to throw off the competitors and what not. (Along with changing up wares as well, other then my staples.)

Was the naming of our mules childish? Why yes it was. Am I a 12 year old lad with no parental supervision? No I am 25 years old. But such is the way of things. Our naming was not out of malicious intent nor out of thinking it was "l33t", more just sort of pushing the envelope and seeing how far we could go before somebody would bust our balls.

It all depends on what it is. If the name its very creative, I thinks it stupid and that the player didn't give much thought into the name. As said before the rip offs of LOTR character names are just stupid.

Here are some of my characters, some are original roleplaying names.

Voelfgar Fireforge - Dwarf cleric
Braeger - Barb Shammy
Krill - Barb Rogue
Roegar - Barb Warrior
Biggiesize - Orge SK, Surnmame to be Dblgnomeburger
TigerKlaw - Vah Shir Beastlord
Delilya Starshine - High Elf Mage

I don't generally mind dumb names, unles they have their RP flag on. That just doesn't make any sense to me. /boggle

I used to be head builder on a small MUD, which is where most of my character names come from. Hiriel, in her original incarnation, was a half-giant barbarian...now she's a barbarian shaman ;p

Her surname is 'Runecaster', which fits her class, and is also the name of my website. I easily resisted the urge to name her Hiriel Runecasterdotnet ;p

I have to agree with the comment you should name your character what you feel comfortable with. Yes, it gets annoying to see all the LOTR and SW references but it's better than those offensive rude, and sexual referenced names. I am guilty of naming my characters class specific names so I guess if you see them on RN you won't ask for rez's, KEI, or Corpse summons : ) I don't think it matters if a name annoys someone or not when they really need the help, adventure, group, or raid. What should matter is how well the person plays their character, that's what gets you either dead or experience...

Enchanter- Inchantraa Mindcaster
Cleric - Cherree Lifesaver
Mage - Eluhmentl Surprize
Necro - Blakk Widdow
Pally - Dahvine Entrventshun
MOnk - Chopp Stix
