Poll: Do non-roleplaying names annoy youFollow

#1 Jan 16 2004 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
When you see someone with a name that is just two words put together do you get annoyed, find it cool, or don't care either way?
#2 Jan 16 2004 at 12:14 PM Rating: Good
Depends - if it's clever, I find it cool. If it's obscene or obnoxious, I'm somewhat annoyed. For the most part - don't care. How's THAT for a middle-of-the-road answer?

I am in between as well. Some of the names out there are quite clever and some are just plain silly.

Funny is alright. Stupid is not.

I hate people who come up with stupid variations of their RL name, like Jimmy, Ymmij. I admit thats rare, but the few times I saw it, it pissed me off.

Movie/Actor references: LaFemme Nikita, Ahnald Zwatznegher etc

Book references: Ddrizzt, Bruennnor,

Sexreferences: Hotcarl, Soandso Pinksocker - if you don't know what those mean, good for you.

Class references: Healllz, Mezzum, Basher, Stabbzz

Thats all I can think of for now.

Here is a few of my own for fun

Fuzztops - Halfling ranger
Breezerboy- Human enchanter
Kittycrooner - Var Shir Bard
Tailover - Iskar SK

Some of these are what you get when a 10 year old helps you name them

May alt warrior is Donatelo, Iksar warrior, Made him to play with my RL friend's iksar Shammy Raphiel and another RL Friend made Leonardo...

Pretty sad for 3 men in our 30's.

I have not got up the courage to /surname Don yet.

Donatelo Nobody is just hilarious to me.

Generally non roleplay named irritate me. People with names like goodheals and stuff are kinda disturbing. However I'm not hard over about it. If I see a newbie with a non-role play name I might say something like your name is bad... If you had a better name I would have given you 500pp >:)

I simply refuse to interact with people who have "i-thought-this-might-be-funny" names. top of my list was a female human warrior named "GOLDENASS" - haha(OMG)

Nah, they don't annoy me. I have a monk named Dizturbed (after the band), and my brother and I at one time had a PvP duo named Cheeseburger and Chickennugget. So it'd be hypocritical if I said it bothered me. :P

There are a lot of names that pretty much just suck.

Literary and movie references bug me a lot particularly. So do descriptive names like the 'Healzya' or 'Savesyamana' or such. This just shows such a lack of imagination. I guess if you're going for a particularly obscure literary reference, at least we might assume that you're well-read, but it is still not much more than plagarism.

I remember back in the early days of EQ when Star Wars episode one came out, and there was no lack of Aaanikaans and Daerthemauls running around. And I thought to myself, 'well, thanks for making 'not-to-group-with' choices a lot easier'. And of course, c'mon, how many freakin' Lord of the Rings variations have we seen in the last two years?

I guess at least I know that an enchanter who has named himself Mezzomatic at least is familiar with one of the tasks he has in a grouping situation. And if he doesn't he's either an Ebay'er or an moron, or both. Bleah. I do remember some guy in /shout mode a while back whining because his character name, which was something along the lines of Stabbin Demhoes got changed by Sony. Kinda funny, sure, very offensive and against Sony policy? yup. To paraphase the Simpsons Comic Book Guy, it may well have been the 'Worst Name Ever.'

Actually, he gave an interview (on this site IIRC) a number of years back. He was asked about whether he plays a Drizzt character. He replied that for trademark reasons he can't. If he plays a Drizzt character on EQ, then he's effectively giving the trademark of the name to Sony. As neato as it would be, it wasn't worht the legal wrangling that he and SOE would have to go through for him to play that character name.

The names that annoy me the most are all the friggin LoTR names. Can't tell you how many elven rangers you see with a name like "Legoolas", or the ultimate "Lleeggoollaass", which btw is actually a char on Vallon Zek i saw running around gfay.

Makes me want to start a necro just to i can wipe the floor with them. AARRRRGGGGGG. What happened to the creativity?

/em smacks all people with names relating to LoTR

Speaking of creativity - my chars name "Leiany" was actually the 3rd proposal from the random names giver during char creation. I recommend everybody to give this a try at creation, the 5 min. time won't hurt.

PS:second on my (/&%$ยง"!-list is a char named "Fantasyfreak".....how self-descriptive...

There is a person in my guild that has the name "Legolastwo". I try to interact with him only when necessary.

One person I saw had the best name ever: "Legsa Roundu" It has been a long time since I saw her, name probably got changed.

Some of my characters are:
Testament - pretty good metal band, now the name of my necro
Traxxn d'Sand - iksar SK. There is sand on Kunark and he leaves tracks, it worked for me.
Kolilya Battledancer - elf bard. Kolilya just sounds like a bardly name without being a direct music reference and "Battledancer" is to stop people from bugging me for SoW or ports. I mean, c'mon, she is holding a freaking drum! Get a clue!

Overall, if the name is creative and funny, I don't mind non-RP names. Too bad these are very few and far between.

Actually, Gbaji has the story turned around a bit. The actual quote is:
Quote:
Q: Did you ever consider petitioning Verant to let you play a Dark Elf Ranger? It seems like if anyone should be allowed that combination, it is you.

A: I've actually had Wizards of the Coast contact Verant in an effort to get a Drizzt character burned in that I could play across the servers, maybe in a GM quest. I think Verant wants to keep their world free of other worlds, though, and they politely refused. As for getting them to change the rules for a character I could play, no, I haven't asked, nor would I expect them to make any exceptions for me (though I wish I could use some of the names of the major characters, at least!).
WotC courted Verant to do it so obviously they weren't overly worried about giving up the trademark. I'm sure there would have been a stack of legal documents protecting WotC had VI accepted the idea.

I used to have a wizard named Jhane. After the -nth time the name generator gave me a name only to then refuse it, I decided out of spite to give her the blandest name possible. It refused Jane so I used the time honored tradition of sticking an "h" in there.

I like names like that. I find them hysterical too. But I just hate stupid, anachronistic names.

There used to be two tailoring merchants side by side in the bazaar named Euripides and Eumenides (sp?). (you-rippa-dese, and you-menda-dese for the Greek-impaired)
#20 Jan 17 2004 at 8:11 PM Rating: Decent
these 2 names are actually charakters from ancient greek folklore

For the most part names don't really bother me much. If you want to have a name that means something understood to be roleplaying way cool and more power to you. Personally, I name my characters what I want and what makes me happy. I did, however, attempt to give my cleric a somewhat roleplaying name, but it was not accepted, so my names explained:

Ranger wood elf named Malenya Thorondir -- Malenya was computer generation and Thorondir means eagle eye.

Froglok cleric named Megz Kittentamer -- Meghan is my daughter's name, and my little cleric is frequently paired with either my husband's kitty bard or kitty warrior.

Do what maks you happy as long as it doesn't offend anyone - not talking about someone being pissy because you are the 50th person he has seen today witht he variation of Legolas...I mean something straight up degrading, demeaning, or insulting.

The most annoying last name I have ever seen was..... LD

EDIT: husband comments...grr
His kitty chars I run with are named Meowsloud Doggenboots (bard) and seems to be ecstatic when someone recognizes the origins of his kitty warrior's name...Parne (last name Frogchaser).

This is a very difficult topic to get a solid stance on. When I read the above statements and hear people talking about roleplaying names, it makes me think of Rath from those old D&D books.

I have seen chars in game named Goku, Gokku, Gokuu, and I am very interested because it makes me think that that person like Dragonball Z like I do.
I did not really pay any attention to Inuyasha till I started a conversation in game with a person who had some variation of the name Inuyasha. I think sometimes it is cool to have a name like this.

Would you consider Goku or Inuyasha role playing names? I tend not to. But i think they are cool names.

I am mildly offended with the overall modernization EQ has had over the last 3 years. The state that EQ has come to be where the bazaar is populated with many people who have created chars for the sole purpose of selling stuff. These chars are named bobsmule, or cheaperthanyou. Can you blame them... those chars exist to sell stuff.

I say a guy in game whose name was Etomer Lortnoc... Well gee that sounds like a really cool name. Someone in the group brought it to our attention that it was Remote Control spelled backwards. I thought the name was cool, it sounded and looked like a 'role playing' name. So now should i not like it now that it is a backward name?

Anyway, a name is a name... would a rose by any other name ... (darn, i don't know the rest of that quote... doh!!!)

Naming policy annoys me more than the names it seeks to prevent in most cases, especially since it also applies to guildnames.

Im in a guild called Legions of Valhalla cos it was founded by mostly scandinavian peeps.

Wanted to create a sibling guild for peoples alt cos our rooster was being swamped by. Tried Legions of Asgard to underline relationship to LoV, name bounced cos dudes at eqguilds enforce policy much more now than they did before for guildnames.

With naming policy its practically impossible to convey anything meaningfull about a guild in name without name getting truly corny.

2 weeks later we created Legions of Lemmings for toons which satisfies naming policy but violates intent of naming policy more than Legions of Asgard would have.

Stupidest names on FV I've seen :

Ihavenoname (Enchanter)
Cleric
Enchanter

I'm sure there's more, but it's been a while since I've interacted with morons on the server.

Stupidest name ever :
Crotchrot and Itchycrotch.

That was my introduction to Stromm. I happily went back to FV after that.

Its a case by case basis but generally frogloks with names referenceing anything to do with frogs or hopping bother me somewhat, although vah shir names concerning cats usually do not /boggle.

One of the funniest names I've seen was Onomybutfelasleep Andigottapee (DAoC). When I log on I usually play for quite a few hours straight so that one brought a smile to my face.
#26 Jan 18 2004 at 9:21 AM Rating: Default
Puns, and clever uses dont bother me because my first toon was a mage Erin Gobragh. (think march 17, if your not gaelic.)
The clerics name is Courtin Andidride. (froglok) So i am guilty.

However I have a low tolerance for names that can be offensive and have reported at least 4 names in 3 years. I try to keep in mind that young folks play this game.
