Corpse Recovery & Must HaveFollow

Last night I attempted to do a quest in the Gulf of Gunthank, and largely due to my own gross stupidity I died twice. After largely soloing for 14 levels without a death perhaps my arrogance got the best of me, however I discovered that night that I was woefully ill-prepared to do a corpse recovery in a very hostile zone. It's pretty much common knowledge that it is always a good idea to have a few extra pieces of armor and a weapon stored in the bank for corpse recovery, but it also seemed like I should have stashed a few extra items in the bank for those really hard corpse recovery efforts (assuming there is no one in the zone that can assist in the recovery of the corpse, and going back to POK almost naked would be highly dangerous). I've thought of a few "must have" items that should be stored in the bank. Can anyone else add to the list?
  • Crypt Master's Conjuring Stone (expensive but appears worth it)
  • Chipped Bone Rod (in case you didn't get the loc quick enough)
  • Enduring Breath Potion
  • Invisibility Potion
  • Gate Potion
  • SOW Potion
  • Spare Armor
  • Spare Weapon with high ATK rating

  • For LDON adventures where the group or individual wipes, what would you recommend for spare equipment to get from the bank to the zone portal in the quickest amount of time possible?

Took me ages to realise how important this is Smiley: frown I wish you'd posted this last year Smiley: wink.

I now keep an 'emergency bag' in the bank for this purpose. You don't mention your Race/Class which of course governs what you need; (E.g. as a Druid I don't need the SoW/Gate/Invis), but I'd add:

  • Potion of Unlife Awareness (Invis to Undead)
  • Illusion Potion (good race/evil race depending on what you are)
  • Foods (Including some stat foods)
  • Any spell reagents (As a dru - Bat wings, fish scales, fire beetle eyes etc.)

  • Any other ideas please?

For LDON..... nothing really. The mobs don't respawn on you so you should have no prob getting your corpse back. Unless you ran into the dungeon past several mobs. What I have done for the longest time is take all of my old no drop armor and put it in a emergency bag in the bank. That way if something ever happens I may not have a entire outfit but I have enough equip to get the job done.

If you are a bard, always have spare instruments in the bank in case of a corpse recovery.

Doesn't have to be anything special, just a regular drum and flute, at the very least. Selos is always faster with a drum, and invs song requires a wind instrument. Both those songs make getting back to your corpse a lot faster and easier...heh.

If i had an emergency kit (note HAD im broke and cant afford one lol) id stash some armor, maybe. probably some alchohol (im not sure but i heard if you drink just enough that you swerve the mobs cant follow you as well). as a ranger i have sow and camo. maybe an invis potin for an indoor corpse recovery in case camo wears off. also a gate potion for really really big emergencies. i dont really worry about food because i have forage mapped to a movement key and get it fairly quickly. thats prett much all i can think of atm.

    ---EDITS---
Where i have movement key i had hotkey.

As a Wiz, I keep my second set of JBoots (bad MQ with friend who did get them 3hrs later) in the bank just for this.

Jboots are lore - you cant have second set.

My emergency kit consists of the ole chipped bone rod and a couple of cloudy potions - trouble is I have a tendency to lose the emergency kit on route, ah well stops the corpse rotting I guess.

    Actually you can.
The shared bank slot doesn't count for some reason, so keep one lore item in shared slot and you can carry/wear another Smiley: smile

But if you take the jboots with you you cant take the pair on your corpse unless you do a second corpse run

Bah not enough coffee or too much vino last night, Jboots arent Lore they are no drop - sorry

    .../shoots herself in the head

And you're right about the lore thing in the shared slot too - surprised sony hasn't go around to fixing that though. Although I assume if you tried to pick up a lore item from the shared slot on a char that already had one it wouldnt let you.

CRs can be very tricky, especially if you get swarmed and go down before you get /loc off. Or get feared/charmed before dying.

Worst one I had recently was 20s war running to Mistmore Castle through LFay get nailed by Corrupted unicorn and went down before I could type in /loc. This is where the rod from Befallen quest becomes very useful.

If I have a dangerous CR, you need a weapon and maybe some back up armor (those old no drops you outgrew are handy for this) but you have to be careful about slots available if you were loaded down when you died. Had a CR where I had to drop several items beause I brought too much on CR - not what you want to do if there is an aggressive mob that just took you out buffed.

Another potential concern is those classes that can rez will be low stg, so having too much gear will just reduce the chances that you can move at all afterwards. With clc or pally, I usually either run naked or just with a weapon unless i know i have to fight my way in.

Shadowrest obviously solves a really bad CR if you can stand the wait.

On LDONs, CRs can be a problem if the party wiped in a room where the mobs are still there, if you were charmed by a mob chanter (they tend to bring you eventually back to their starting point after tour of dungeon and kill you when it breaks), as well as wandering monsters being a threat.

However, with the time limit, running to the bank for gear first in LDON CR usually is not practical.

For my characters, a nice buck nekkid run across half of Norrath to retrieve my precious belongings are just what they need to remind them what it is to be alive. Especially if that involves Everfrost and/or any part of Velious.

In other words, when I die I hit the ground running back after my corpse. All my characters have their own invis spells though, so I might sing a different tune with a warrior or monk.

That, and I try not to go to that many places that I couldn't get my battered corpse out of easily.

Agreed, by the end of my first month playing EQ I had the sense to put a coffin in the bank. A CR in Befallen (anybody fell down that hole? - C'mon you know you have... (blatent Hi-jack attempt)) can be tough, but the Necro may not have coffins on his/her person.

Of course all my newb armor and weapons that I had out-grown were there.

In an LDoN, if you don't have a Cleric/Pally that can rez, and/or at least one class with invis/camo/gather shadows, you deserve to wait for the timer to run out (sorry if that is Flamage).

invis potions are nice, food/water, but I find the best thing to have is a good network of loyal friends. This s/b easy to accomplish by most posters on this board, but this is exactly why playing like an @ss can get you in the end.

All very good ideas. The various spells (sow/invis/enduring breath, etc). Extra armor, weapons.

But the most important (and this is for a difficult corpse run as specified at the beginning) is a Necro as a friend, a spare coffin and an alt to play until your necro friend is online and able to help you. :-)

All of those suggestions are good ones. I'll add another that I think is more important though:

Learn the zones you travel through. I know this is harder/rarer nowadays then it used to be. I've been playing since before Kunark, so to me, traveling across multiple zones, without any sort of map, just comes second nature. That's how we all did it back then. You simply learned to navigate in the zones by the landmarks around you (just like you do in RL).

If you take the time to do that, instead of just rushing through one area to get to another, you'll *know* where you died. You'll also know exactly how to get back to where you died. If you are soloing, you should maybe make a point of only going to places you can get to *solo*. I play a paladin, and have no invis spell. In 4+ years of playing, I have *never* not been able to just run naked to pick up my corpse. I have also *never* needed a bone wand to help find my corpse. If I need an invis or a levitate to get where my corpse is, it's because I was with a group when I died, and presumably someone has an invis and a levitate they can cast on me.

Not that those other suggestions aren't good ones, but if you're on a budget at all, maybe consider just using your own wits and skill to avoid needing any of it in the first place. Hunt in areas you know you can get to naked. It's just not that hard. If you can get to someplace solo without agroing anything along the way while fully armored and buffed, you can do it while totally naked. I do have spare armor and weapons in my bank, but mainly because it's old no-drop stuff. I don't keep a gate potion in my bank (why? I have one on me, and presumably I'm not going to gate while CRing until I get my corpse). Invis potions, and sows, and EBs, and levs are easy enough to get wherever you are bound. Take some time and learn which vendors sell potions you need in places like PoK (hint, look in one of the buildings near the PoT stone).

Know your limitations. Know where you can get to on your own. Learn the routes you take to get from place to place. Learn the zones you are hunting in. Learn to be able to simply look around in a zone and know where you are. The vast majority of the time when you die, it's at a "known location". You traveled to a specific spot in a zone to hunt, and died. You should be able to get back to that spot. Dying while traveling is usually the only exception, but you should be paying attention to where you are going and how you got there well enough so that you can find your way there if you die.

One last thing. If you agro something in an area you are unfamiliar with, and would be difficult to get back to (indoor zones with narrow halls typically), do not run randomly around trying to get away. Odds are that you'll just agro more mobs and end up dying somewhere where you are totally lost. That's how most people lose their corpses (and need stuff like bone chipped wands or coffins). Once again: Learn the area you are in. Learn the route you took in, and know the route you need to take to get out. If you don't know exactly how to get to the nearest zoneline, don't bother running if you get in over your head. Deaths are pretty easy to recover from if you just avoid making really bad mistakes that get your corpse lost.

I put together one of these emergency kits at about lvl 12, mostly because I was terrified at the very thought of having spent all that time and platinum only to have it end up on a corpse I couldn't find!

Funny thing is, I have never used it! Newbie armor, spare weapon, 10 pack of SoW, gate potion, chipped bone rod, a light source... the works!

I'm not sorry I did it. I may, in fact, actually need it sometime. But I think the main reason for assembling the kit was that it gave me confidence that I COULD do a difficult CR if and when it came down to that.

And for that reason alone, it was worth the excercise, the expense and the space in the bank.

Keep an enduring breath item in bank incase you die underwater.
